During a web conference on Covid -19 Update organized by the Medical Association of Thessaloniki, the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, as well as the need to vaccinate children and pregnant women.
At the same time, it was stressed that even those who have a mild illness can have long-term effects on their health and that is why it was proposed to create post-Covid clinics in all hospitals with the participation of doctors of various specialties.
The event was coordinated by the president of ISTH, Nikos Nitsas and the dean of the School of Health Sciences of AUTh, Theodoros Dardavesis, while the Deputy Minister of Health, Mina Gaga and the president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, Athantios, addressed a greeting.
During the event, Professor of Pathology – Infectious Diseases, Sotiris Tsiodras said that vaccines are safe and effective and added that recent large studies certify the safety of vaccines in relation to reproductive function. He also noted that in addition to vaccines, investments should be made in treatment regimens for Primary Care. He also stressed that many mistakes have been made in the treatment of patients with Covid-19 in Primary Care with unnecessary administration of antibiotics and large doses of corticosteroids.
For his part, the associate professor of Pathology – Infectious Diseases, AUTh, Symeon Metallidis, noted that although the role of Primary Care is dominant, the fear of admission to hospitals leads patients to delayed attendance. He also stressed that post-Covid clinics should be organized in all hospitals with the participation of many specialties as people who became ill then show symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, respiratory fibrosis, taste and smell disorders for a long time, irritability and depression. . He added that doctors should state the side effects of vaccines on the AOF Yellow Card.
“An increase in hospitalizations is expected in children”
The professor of Pediatrics at EKPA, Theoklis Zaoutis stated that an increase in hospitalizations is expected in children who will suffer from Covid-19 and stressed that 1-2% of children who will become ill will need to be admitted to the ICU and therefore parents should be convinced to vaccinate children aged 12-17 years. He also noted that the chance of myocarditis and pericarditis is much higher in the case of disease and less than in the vaccine. He added that the disease is associated with increased rates of depression.
The professor of Pediatrics – Infectious Diseases at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Emmanouil Roilidis said that the disease of children is not always mild, that there are children who have been admitted to the ICU. Regarding the 3rd dose of the vaccine, he said that it is not obligatory and that it is recommended only for vulnerable people such as immunosuppressed people, transplant recipients, kidney patients and cancer patients who do not develop good immunity after the second dose or develop immunity slowly. He added that pregnancy and breastfeeding are not contraindicated for vaccination and noted that the vaccines have been tested on approximately 150,000 pregnant women in the United States without any problems, either for themselves or for the children they gave birth to.
Mr. Zaoutis added that with the vaccination of pregnant women, antibodies are passed on to newborns and thus are protected, while Mr. Metallidis pointed out that mRNA vaccines are recommended for pregnant women, which are not associated with thrombosis. Pregnant women, as mentioned by Mr. Metallidis, have an increased risk of serious disease and in case of need, if they are intubated, they should take the fetus.
