In the dismantling of a gang that was active in production and trafficking of illegals alcoholic beverages the authorities proceeded to Crete. The deconstruction of the organization comes shortly after the case of students who partied at a well-known southern suburbs restaurant and ended up in hospital after drinking bomba drinks.
In this context, an investigation has been launched throughout Greece in order to identify the illegal “centers” that sell illegal alcohol in nightclubs and to put a brake on their activity. This is how the dismemberment of the organization in question came about, with investigators already examining its possible connection to the store where the students had a party last October.
Illegal distilleries and transport
According to the report, the members of the gang had been operating since at least 2022 and were fully organized as they had set up an interconnected line of illegal alcohol production, which started from the illegal distillery based in Agia Varvara, Heraklion.
The alcoholic beverage was produced by the perpetrators without paying corresponding duties and other taxes without a distillery and distiller’s license issued by the competent Customs authority.
Afterwards, it was transported by a transport company to another member of the group who also took care of the storage of the trafficked alcoholic product in Athens, while an accomplice supervised and coordinated the line of its movement from production to its transport to Athens, also undertaking the finding of the final buyers for the disposal of the produced product.
After a police operation on Thursday (5/12) – during which five people were arrested – investigators found a ton of distilled alcoholic liquid stored inside the premises of the transport company without relevant documents.
In particular, the complete installation and operation of an alcoholic beverage distillery consisting of a total of three rooms, each of which was used for a specific purpose in the installed alcoholic beverage production line, was established.
Inside these premises, complete equipment of a distillation system consisting of a hand-made distillation still in full operation by burning oil after a cooling mechanism and the accompanying tank for extracting distilled alcoholic liquid, 6,500 Lt of distilled alcoholic beverage, four plastic tanks, containing a total of 26,400 lt of unknown composition were located liquid for fermentation and distillation, empty used containers labeled “potash”, empty used containers labeled “yeast for fermentation”, four breathalyzers and consignment note forms and computerized notes.
As the research showed, the fermentation and production process was completed through an automated stirring system and hydraulic interconnection of all the tanks with the individual elements of the system (cooling mechanisms, etc.). In fact, the said system was in full operation during the inspection.
