There has been a lot of discussion about Delta mutation of coronavirus and how much those who have been vaccinated can be protected from it.
The coronavirus delta mutation is less sensitive than alpha and other variants to the neutralizing antibodies that develop in the body of those vaccinated or infected with Covid-19, according to a new international scientific study, which confirms its greater potential. “Indian” strain for immune escape.
Delta has also been found to be more effective at infecting and reproducing airway cells. These findings explain why this variant has spread so rapidly worldwide and has become so prevalent.
Researchers from Britain, India and other countries, led by Professor of Clinical Microbiology Ravindra Gupta at the University of Cambridge, who published the paper in the journal Nature, conducted laboratory experiments comparing Delta with British »variant and dominant until a few months ago) and the original in Chinese Wuhan.
Delta was found to be almost six times less sensitive to blood serum with antibodies than people who had previously been infected with Covid-19, and eight times less sensitive to antibodies to people who had been vaccinated against coronavirus with two doses of either Pfizer / BioNTech or AstraZeneca.
Less effective than all vaccines
Previous studies have shown that the Delta – originally located in the Indian state of Maharashtra at the end of 2020 and now has spread widely to more than 90 countries, including Greece – doubles the risk of hospitalization of the unvaccinated compared to Alpha. It has also been found that all vaccines are relatively less effective against Delta, although the protection they provide – when both doses have been given – is still considered good.
The researchers analyzed 130 health infections at three Delhi hospitals that had previously been vaccinated with two doses of AstraZeneca. The vaccine was found to be less effective against Delta than other variants in these individuals.
Dr. Anurag Agrawal of the Institute of Genomics and Integrated Biology of India in Delhi said that the contamination of vaccinated health workers in Delta tends to become a major problem, so he said, “We urgently need to find new variations between sanitary. “The new study also shows that infection control measures need to be continued even in the post-vaccination era.”
