According to the text of the decree published by the White House, Japanese cars will now be subject to a 15%duty, instead of the previous 27.5%, and the same limit will apply to many other product categories.
This is a victory for Japan, as her special envoy to the duties went to Washington on Thursday to push Trump to sign the decree – weeks after the agreement was announced on both sides.
The decision offers significant relief in the Japanese car industry, which employs about 8% of the country’s workforce. The previous duties 27.5% consisted of a key rate of 2.5% and an additional 25% duty imposed by the Trump government as part of its overall commercial strategy.
With the new agreement, Japan ensures similar treatment with the European Union, which already enjoys a corresponding 15% duty for many products.
On the sidelines of the agreement, the US president argued that Japan is going to invest $ 550 billion in the US, with the US government “choosing” where these funds will be directed. Trump also said that the US would keep 90% of the profits from these investments, although the document does not give details. The Japanese side notes that these are mainly loans and government guarantees.
