THE Donald Trump incorrectly appreciated the Chinaestimating that it will succumb to financial pressure and letting the US unprepared to handle the trade war of duties, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry adviser.
“The dominant narrative within the Trump team is that because the Chinese economy is in poor condition, if the US is playing the tariff paper, then China will have no choice but to surrender,” said Wu Xinbo, director of the US Studies Center at Fudan University,
“But strangely for them, China did not collapse, nor did it surrender,” Wu said during a panel in Shanghai today (25.4.2025). “The American side incorrectly appreciated the situation and is also not well prepared for the confrontation with China.”
The fate of the global economy and the financial markets depends to a large extent on whether the US and China can find a way to avoid a prolonged trade war, according to a Bloomberg report. Trump has hit China with 145% duties in most goods since he took over his duties, causing Beijing to retaliate and threaten to eliminate most of the trade among the world’s largest economies.
The trade war comes as Chinese policy makers are struggling with persistent deflation, multi -year real estate collapse and weak consumer costs. Exports represented almost 40% of growth in the first quarter, underlining the importance of global missions to promote the Chinese economy.
Trump has repeatedly tried to take President Xi Jinping on the phone since he began accumulating duties in China and claimed this week that talks were held between the two sides, but refusing to clarify at what level. China has denied that trade negotiations are underway and Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Friday that the US “should not mislead the public”.
Before the talks begin, officials in Beijing want to see Trump show more respect, limiting the derogatory comments of his cabinet members, Bloomberg said earlier. China also wants the US to appoint a person who will take over the talks and show a willingness to deal with China’s concerns about US sanctions and Taiwan, the self -governing island that Beijing considers its territory.
