Multiple are the benefits of Greece from the expression of interest, for hydrocarbon surveys south of its Cretefrom the American oil colossus Chevron.
Among them is the fact that Greece – with this move of Chevron – secures its Greek sovereign rights (south of Crete), exercising them, government circles note. At the same time, the plots to be announced south of Crete are within the areas that were defined by the announcement of the international competition in 2014.
With the expression of interest south of Crete, the American colossus recognizes the Greek EEZ in the region.
It is recalled the positive first evolution that Libya, in auctioning of maritime plots in which it recently proceeded, followed the midfield with Greece and not the Turkolibyan Memorandum, respecting the Greek sovereign rights.
Chevron’s second expression of interest, just two months after the government was accepted by the same company for investigations in the maritime area southwest of the Peloponnese and to west of Crete (in January 2025), is a vote of confidence in the Greek government.
Further activation of the American colossus in the Eastern Mediterranean region and the simultaneous presence of another energy giant, Exxon Mobil, highlights the role Greece can play in the global energy market.
The interest of the American company highlights the strategic importance of the eastern Mediterranean and Greece’s key role in it.
With the entry of Chevron as early as January into new areas, adjacent to the areas where Exxon Mobil is already working, the prospects are confirmed that our country can have significant deposits.
