The young duties announced by Donald Trump is “almost definitive” and will not be negotiated immediately, his trade spokesman told CBS. White House Jameson Green, who defended commercial measures implemented by the US president against Brazil.
“These customs duties are almost definitive,” the White House Commerce spokesman said, while a question about possible negotiations for their reduction the official said they would probably not be held “in the coming days”.
Donald Trump signed the Presidential Decree on Thursday (31.8.2025) setting the percentage of new duties that will burden the products of dozens of countries imported into the US and ranging from 10% to 41%.
The new import duties will be implemented for most countries from August 7 to allow customs services to be organized.
The products of the European Union, Japan and South Korea will be burdened by 15%of the United Kingdom with 10%, Indonesia with 19%, Vietnam and Taiwan with 20%.
For the eight economies with which the United States has made an agreement, including the European Union and Japan, duties have been “pretty much defined”, says Kevin Hasset, Trump’s main financial adviser to the NBC network.
But for dozens of US trade partners with whom there is no agreement “we expect the negotiations to continue,” he added.
For Donald Trump, duties are also a means of political pressure and involvement in the internal affairs of other countries. Brazil, for example, must be punished for the prosecution of Trump’s far -right ally and former President Hair Bolsonaro and is threatened with a 50%duty.
“The president found in Brazil, as in other countries, misuse of the law, misuse of democracy,” said Jameson Green. “It is normal to use tariff tools for geopolitical issues (!),” He added.
