The countries that are now targeted by the US are Japan (25%), Kazakhstan (25%), Malaysia (25%), South Korea (25%), South Africa (30%), but also the most vulnerable financial Laos and Myanmar, which announced 40%duties.
As the US president promised, new “Letters of Requirements” have also been sent to the last five countries, specifying the percentages that will come into force on August 1st.
It is noteworthy that for three of the five countries, the new duties are slightly lower than those announced in April as “reciprocal”: Myanmar fell from 44% to 40%, Laos from 48% to 40%, while Kazakhstan decreased from 27% to 25%. In contrast, Malaysia climbed one unit (from 24% to 25%), reaching the same level as Japan and South Korea. South Africa is stable at 30%.
These duties are part of Trump’s broader strategy to impose new terms of trade, with a pre -election aroma, while markets internationally remain on alert due to the liquidity created by the new phase of Washington’s commercial redefinition.
