The global water crisis is now more than just a terrifying perspective or a serious, warning scenario: it is a reality.
According to the World Meteorology Organization (WMO)in 2023 the largest decrease in the flow of rivers has been recorded in the last three decades.
At the same time, as UNESCO presented, as reported, approximately 3.6 billion people They do not have access to clean water for at least one month a year – a number that is estimated to reach 5 billion by 2050. Attica, unfortunately, is no exception with the evidence to date be the worst omen for the future of the basin.

The latest data that arrives at us from EYDAP reveal a very worrying picture: Attica reservoirs – more specifically Mornos, Yliki, Evinos and Marathon – They have seen their reserves decrease by about 45% in just two years, falling from 1.2 billion cubic meters in 2023 to 659 million cubic meters in 2025.
The Attica Region has already been put into an “orange alarm”, as existing stocks are sufficient, with current consumption data, for just 700 days.
At the same time, in some areas of Attica there is an increase in water demand, which exceeds the 40% compared to last year. A very difficult development that further burdens the situation.
Impacts on everyday life and public health
Having all the above data in mind we understand that the prospect of an increasingly intense and more intense critical water scarcity in the area of Attica It even practically touches our daily lives. And things may get even more serious in the near future. For example, The probability of holidays in water supplyespecially in areas where there are no alternatives, it is now a possible scenario.
At the same time, the reduction of the amount of available water may be accompanied by degradation of qualityincreasing the health risks, especially in the most vulnerable groups of the population. But also on the economic level, the phenomenon of water scarcity is likely to hit areas such as Tourism, agriculture and industry. And, of course, water scarcity is directly linked to consequences of climate crisis, as increased temperatures and extreme weather conditions accelerate the exhaustion of water reserves.
EYDAP’s strategic response
In the face of the urgent need to find immediate solutions, EYDAP has already shaped and has begun to apply a generalized strategy which combines immediate interventions, important initiatives and a long -term design in projects and investments. Initially, drilling are activated in Mavrosouvala, while testing is performed by Boeotian Kifissos and the Poliki pumping stations are reinforced, in order to maximize pumping in times of crisis.
At the same time, the EYDAP places particular emphasis on informing and raising public awareness. As early as June 2024, the first communication campaign has begun on the global water crisis, followed by second in December of the same year. Through partnerships with media, bodies such as BSE and SETE, as well as with Local Government, EYDAP’s goal is to properly inform the world and cultivate one new water -saving culture and respect for the environment.
