OR case of the bloody conflict at Vorizia of Heraklion, which shocked her Crete and led to one another tragedy with dead and injured, remains under the microscope of the authorities. As stated by the press representative of EL.AS., Constantia Dimoglidou, speaking to ERTnews, investigations continue at an intensive pace, as the weapon used has not yet been identified. «So far armament that has been used during clash in Vorizia of Heraklion it has not been found, but the forensic examination helped us to determine what kind of weapon each man lost and the rest were injured by», stated the Mr. Dimoglidou. She pointed out that the results of the ballistic test are awaited, while categorically denying the reports that spoke of «2.000 calyces». «Up to 100 calyxes have been found», he clarified.
Strong police forces in the area
In region of Vorizia and in the wider area, strong police forces remain. According to the representative of EL.AS., two EKAM teams (Special Suppression Anti-Terrorist Unit), two TAE teams of Crete (Police Operations Departments), as well as Security and Organized Crime police officers operate there — a total of about 300 people. The presence of the reinforcements that arrived from Athens seems to have created pressure on the family and wider environment of the three wanted persons, a fact that «eventually led to their surrender», as she noted.
The chronicle of the tradition of the three brothers
Referring to the process of arresting the three wanted brothers, Mrs. Dimoglidou described: «The police found that at least one of the arrested was staying at a certain hotel in the area of Heraklion. They got there, but the people had already left. The hotel owner was brought in to consider whether a case should be filed against him for foster care».
Then, as he revealed, there was communication from a relative with the Police, so that the investigations were stopped, as the wanted persons intended to surrender. «The officers did not stop, they continued to search the house and then the meeting point was given to hand them over to the authorities», he said characteristically.
«No involvement from inside the prison is seen»
The press representative of EL.AS. make it clear that it doesn’t exist no evidence of involvement of a person from the prison in this particular case. «It does not appear in any way that anyone from within the prison is involved in the incident. After all, during the preliminary investigation by the Police, something organized does not emerge, but a random meeting of the two sides. At that point the altercation started and then we had the bloody episode».
However, as he said, searches were also carried out inside prisons, in case there was information related to both the placement of the device and the fight.
Investigations are ongoing – Police presence as long as necessary
Mrs. Dimoglidou underlined that the reinforcement forces will remain on the island for as long as requiredin order to ensure the tranquility and safety of the residents. «We should be sure that the residents of the area are also safe, but also that both sides have understood that the incident should not be continued», he stated. At the same time, he said that the Police is trying to clarify the role of each arrested person and to fully understand the circumstances under which the victim was killed. «Unfortunately, we also do not have a clear picture of how the incident started, as there is no video footage and no weapons have been found», noted.
«What they learn from children must stop»
With an emotional tone, the representative of EL.AS. addressed a message to the two families and residents: «Both sides need to understand that what they have learned perhaps from young children must stop. Human lives cannot be lost so unjustly», he said, adding that there are also citizens in the area who do not belong to either of the two families and should feel safe.
«Police are operating normally in the area»
Responding to comments that local authorities are unable to impose order, Ms. Dimoglidou stressed that the police action in the area is continuous and effective. «Consider that every day and every shift there are at least two EKAM teams, among others. In September and August we had two very large operations. People were arrested for various crimes from the wider area», noted. In fact, he revealed that the local police alone have seized more than 100 firearms, while cases have been filed against their owners. «So we cannot talk about an area where the police do not act normally», concluded.
