Sadness in Greek sport scattered the news of veteran death basketball player Alekou Kontovounisiou, who died at the age of 88.
Kontovounios was born in Athens on November 3, 1937, he was a special basketball player, also known as his nicknames “Juggler” and “Dancer”, thanks to his impressive and technically perfect style of play.
His career began in 1952 with the Pagrati jersey, where he fought until 1961. He then moved to Triton (1961–1967), before returning to Pagrati (1967–1974). In 1982 he wore the Old Faliro jersey for a while, shortly before he completed his parquet run.
At the end of his racing career, Kontovounios was involved in coaching, serving teams such as Pagrati and Aigaleo, transmitting his experience and knowledge to younger generations.
His presence in the Men’s National was also important, with which he recorded 67 entries from 1959 to 1967, contributing to the development of Greek basketball at a time when the sport was in its first steps in the country.
