After nearly six decades of action, the US Aid Organization for International Development (USAID) ceases today (0107.2025) to exist as the President’s government Donald Trump ruled that he did not serve the interests of USA.
“On July 1, USAID will officially stop giving help abroad. Aid programs in line with Donald Trump’s government policy and serve US interests will be managed by the State Department, where they will be implemented with greater responsibility, strategy and efficiency, “Marco Rubio said in a message.
The “end of the season” for USAID is written on the same day that an international study warns that cutting US financing can lead to over 14 million extra deaths of vulnerable people by 2030 – and one -third of them will be children.
What is left of the USAID will be integrated into the Foreign Ministry under the supervision of State Department Chief Mark Rubio.
“In addition to creating, at the expense of taxpayers, a global network of non -governmental organizations, USAID does not have much to show after the end of the Cold War,” he added.
The publication of the report on USAID in Lancet Medical Magazine coincided with a conference on the funding of development organized in Spain, with leaders from around the world – the US was absent.
By saying goodbye to USAID workers, former US presidents George Bush and Barack Obama, as well as singer Bono, welcomed the work of this service. His abolition is “inexplicable” and will remain in history as a “colossal mistake” Obama said in a video message. Bush defended the Pepfar program he himself implemented to fight AIDS.
After returning to the White House in January, Donald Trump sought to dismantle the USAID, accusing the service of waste and promoting values that were “opposed to US interests”.
On January 20, shortly after his swearing -in, he signed a decree on the freezing of American aid abroad and the review of the programs to determine if they comply with the policy he intends to pursue, especially those concerning abortion, and family -friendly.
The freezing of the aid caused shock to the independent service, founded by John F. Kennedy in 1961 and managed an annual budget of $ 42.8 billion. This amount accounts for 42% of global humanitarian aid.
All the humanitarian sector worldwide has been in vortex by this decision. US resources were an important part of the budget of various UN services and non -governmental organizations and these losses are impossible to cover quickly.
In May, speaking to a parliamentary committee, Rubio ruled out people due to cuts in the help of USAid.
These studies “are based on incorrect cases of what we are doing” and “assume that the abolition of the USAID service will mean the disappearance of vital aid abroad, which is not true,” a high -ranking government official told a journalist today.
