US President Donald Trump, in a document made public today, October 30, set the 7,500 refugees as the upper limit that the country can accept in 2026.
That’s according to a White House document signed by Donald Trump on refugees, which is part of a broader effort to reshape refugee policy in the US and worldwide.
The document, dated September 30, states that 30 of these positions will be given to South Africans from the white Afrikaner minority.
Trump claims that Afrikaners are being persecuted in South Africa because of their race, which the country’s government denies.
When he returned to the White House in January, Trump froze all refugee admissions, saying they would only resume if he determined it was in the best interest of the United States.
A few weeks later he launched an effort to bring white Afrikaners to the US, receiving heavy criticism. By early September only 138 South Africans had been accepted as refugees in the US.
In that document, Trump says his administration will consider granting asylum to “other victims of illegal or unfair discrimination in their home countries.”
An internal document drafted by administration officials in April suggested the US government would prioritize Europeans if they were targeted for expressing certain views, such as opposing mass immigration or supporting populist parties.
In the document made public today, October 30, no mention is made of Europeans or other national groups.
