In a global context where energy dominance is becoming a critical element of national security, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) organized an event with the central theme “Powering US Energy Dominance”, during which the US Secretary of the Interior and Head of the US Energy Dominance Council, Duck Bergham, gave an interview about the role of the United States in shaping a new international energy map and the importance of strategic alliances. In the context of this interview, Mr. Bergam referred extensively to Greece, extolling the leadership of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the role of our country in Europe’s energy security.
Greece is today at the core of Europe’s energy security, acting as a hub for transporting US LNG to Eastern Europe. Speaking about our country’s role, the US Secretary of the Interior and Head of the US Energy Sovereignty Council, Duck Bergham, underlined that “the Prime Minister of Greece fully understands the issue of energy independence and is completely supportive. Greece is an excellent partner of the United States”.
Mr. Bergam referred to his visit to our country and in particular to Revythoussa, where, as he said, “31 LNG ships from the United States had been unloaded. It is a facility that increases its capacity and channels quantities not only for Greece, but also for the rest of the Balkans.”
This report follows the visit of the American Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Bergam, together with the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Stavros Papastavrou, to Revythoussa, where the decisive role of energy infrastructures in the secure supply of Europe and the interconnection with the markets of the Balkans and Central Europe was highlighted. At the same time, as the Greek Minister of State stated, “energy independence must be linked to low prices for households and businesses”.
Mr. Bergam’s position confirms the constantly upgrading strategic role of Greece in the transition to Europe’s energy security and the strengthening of transatlantic relations. As he specifically stated:
“The idea of the North-South axis, which also starts from Greece, combined with its participation in the “3+1″ scheme, creates enormous opportunities to break Eastern Europe’s energy dependence on Russia. This, even more than NATO, will stop the threat of border conflicts that have lasted for over a century.”
A typical example of Greece’s upgrade is the upcoming meeting of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation (P-TECC), which will take place on November 6 and 7 in Athens. In addition to the Minister of Energy of Greece, the Minister of Energy of the USA, Chris Wright, and 24 other Ministers of Energy from European countries will participate in it. In this light, our country emerges as a pillar of stability, security, cooperation and a point of reference for the wider region.
