US: Finally the tax -free introduction of small parcels

Terminated today (29.8.25) the exemption from their duties in force for the small parcels entering the USAa decision that has prompted many countries to suspend package deliveries to the largest economy in the world.

Specifically, these exceptions have to date with the shipment of less than $ 800 to the US without the imposition of duties when entering US territory, according to Bloomberg.

However, on July 30, US President Donald Trump signed a decree to abolish this exemption, saying he wishes to “put an end to a devastating window used, inter alia, to avoid duties and sending synthetic opioids and other dangerous products”.

Only the “gifts” intended for natural persons of less than $ 100 will still be able to enter the US without imposing duties.

According to the US Border Protection Office (CBP), 98% of drugs, 97% of counterfeit products and 70% of health -hazardous products seized in the US in 2024 were identified in small parcels.

“If this window closes, thousands of lives will be saved by reducing the flow of drugs and dangerous and forbidden substances,” an US official assured during a press conference.

Now, and with the exception of the “gifts” of less than $ 100, parcels entering the US are subject to the same duties as any other product, ie at least 10%, or 15% for those from the EU and up to 50% for them from India and Brazil.

Before even in force, the measure had begun to cause problems in sending parcels to the US.

On Tuesday (26.8.25) the World Postal Association (UPU), a UN organization, announced that 25 countries have decided to suspend parcel missions to the US because of the vague framework.

Among these countries are many European, such as Germany, France or Italy, but also India, Japan, Australia and Mexico.

The reason they refer is the short period of time before the measure came into force, while Trump’s decree stipulates that it is “for” carriers and other authorized parties to collect customs duties in advance “before paying them to the US authorities.
