The US has agreed to extend the exemption from sanctions, which will allow the Turkey to continue buying Russian natural gas Until May, according to a Turkish official, Bloomberg reports.
The three -month exception given to Turkey will end on March 20th. More than 45% of the country’s gas imports came from Russia last year, according to Bloomberg calculations based on elements of the National Energy Regulatory Authority.
These commissions were vital during a winter cooler than usual and will remain important in the summer, as hydroelectric power production is expected to be reduced.
Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek and US Finance Minister Scott Bessed had spoken earlier this week and “discussed sanctions, as well as other financial issues and issues of national security of mutual interest,” according to a statement issued by the US.
The US has imposed sanctions on Gazprombank, a financial institution vital for energy payments in November to limit Russia’s revenue from gas. However, the great importers Turkey and Hungary later received exceptions.
