Turkey: Second wave of arrests for corruption against mayors and opposition executives

Turkish authorities arrested three more mayors belonging to the Republican People’s Party (CHP) of its opposition opposition Turkey as suspects in corruption cases.

This is the mayor of the city of Adana in southern Turkey, Zeidan Karalar, the mayor of Antigiaman in eastern Turkey, Abdurahman Tutrere and the Mayor of Antalya, Muchitin Bozek.

The first two arrests were carried out in the context of investigations conducted by the Istanbul General Prosecutor’s Office, while Muchitin Bozek’s arrest falls under a similar investigation by the Antalya General Prosecutor’s Office.

Reports also indicate that the Deputy Mayor of the Bujuksekmege of Istanbul, Ahmet Sahin, was also arrested. The mayor of the same city is already in custody.

The former Mayor of Smyrna, Tounts Soger, was arrested last Tuesday, July 1, as part of a warrant against 157 executives of the Municipality and the CHP.

This is the second major wave of arrest of mayors and chp executives, after the arrest on March 19 of the Mayor of Constantinople, Ekrem Imoglou.

Also in custody are the mayors of other nine regional municipalities of Constantinople and two of the Adana.
