Disturbed, as they all show, the calm waters of Aegeanas the Turkey He issued NAVTEX, making it known that from today and for ten days the oceanographic “Piri Reis” will conduct scientific research in areas of the Aegean Sea.
According to Turkey’s announcement, investigations are going to last ten days and relate to a maritime zone extending to the Aegean west of Lesvos, south of Chios and to the islet of Kalogeros, located between Chios and Andros.
“Piri Reis” can do research in the region, but there is a question of jurisdiction of NAVTEX, as its course is erased within Greek territorial waters and, of course, over a Greek continental shelf.
Indeed, Piri Reis’s ship on the islet of Kalogeros, which is included almost throughout the year in a permanent firing scope of the Greek Armed Forces, is causing additional concern.
The Greek anti-navtex
As expected, Greece responded to its own Navtex (154/25 of the Lemnos Station) to the claims promoted by Turkey’s movement. However, what remains to be seen is how the ship will move in the next 24 hours, apparently under close monitoring of Athens.
The announcement of Piri Reis’s investigations is recorded a few days after developments in south of Crete, where the US Chevron submitted an official proposal for two marine plots, as well as the resurrection of the issue of the Greece -Cyprus electric interconnection.
