The ‘Strict application of the legislation to protect minors from the dissemination of online content, which may have a negative and irreversible effect on their health“, Asks for the ND Eurogroup’s MEP and spokesman, Dimitris Tsiodraswith his question to the European Commission.
Specifically, he asks the Commission how it intends to tackle the dissemination and rapid spread of phenomena such as the “skinnytok challenge” on social media and how effective the efforts of platforms are to have minors to access educational content on healthy eating and eating.
Mr Tsiodras also notes that “social networking platforms and media allows content to be disseminated which can have a negative and irreversible impact on minors’ health and that” alongside other campaigns, the recent “challenge of Skinnytok” pushes minors.
In addition, he stresses that “this is a risk, as this campaign can harm the health and physical development of a large number of minors”, adding that “access to such content spreads very quickly and is found in hundreds of thousands of publications.”
He concludes by asking the Commission whether the dissemination of such content constitutes, based on the Digital Services act, “systemic risk” and, therefore, very large platforms must – and in this case – apply the provisions of the act of managing such risks, such as risks.
