‘We need to fix our elections’
Decree that will require voters to prove that they are US citizens signed by US president Tuesday Donald Trump. In addition, the decree will prevent states from counting the letter votes they receive after the election day.
This decree also provides for the deprivation of federal funding by states that do not comply.
Trump has long been challenging the US electoral system and still falsely claims that his defeat in 2020 over Joe Biden was entitled.
The US president and his Republican allies have also claimed without evidence that many people who are not US citizens have voted in the US elections, which is illegal and rarely.
Last year, the House of Representatives, in which the majority of Republicans had, approved a bill banning non -American citizens from registering to vote in federal elections, which is already illegal. The bill was not adopted by the Senate, which was then under the control of the Democrats.
Yesterday’s decree of Trump has a corresponding objective. “This is a blatant attack on the Republic and an authoritarian abuse of power,” Lisa Gilbert’s co -chair of the Public Citizen organization complained.
In recent years, Republicans have tried to impose additional restrictions on the election process, while Democrats are seeking to simplify the process by supporting the Americans’ right to the letter and early vote.
Public Citizen pointed out that about 146 million Americans do not have a passport while a Brennan Center survey showed that 9% of US citizens who have the right to vote – 21.3 million people – do not have “immediate” evidence.
The White House said Trump’s decree would prevent foreign citizens from intervening in the US elections. Based on the decree, those who participate in the elections for the first time should be registered in the election to vote to answer a question usually asked to obtain American citizenship.
“Federal resources for the elections will be given to the states provided that they comply with all the measures provided for by federal legislation, including the demand to use the national voter registration form that will require proof of citizenship,” the White House said.
Trump’s decree also criticizes the policy of some states that allow for the counting of letter votes after the election day.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatoures, 18 states, Puerto Rico, the virgin islands and the Federal capital of Washington count letter votes that have a postmark before or on the day of the election day, regardless of when they reach the election.
