Trump says India was offered to reduce duties to 0% for US goods

The US President Donald Trump He implied that India was offered to reduce tariffs on US products to 0%, as the Asian country is negotiating an agreement to avoid higher taxes.

Donald Trump made these comments today (15.5.2025) during a business event in Doha, Qatar, as part of his Middle East tour. Trump did not give further details on the obvious offer of New Delhi and has not been officially recognized by New Delhi.

“It is very difficult to sell in India and offered us an agreement with which they are essentially willing to be charged literally without duties,” Trump said.

India was one of the first countries to launch trade negotiations with the US after Prime Minister Narendra Monti’s visit to the White House in February, with both sides agreeing to complete the first phase of a bilateral agreement by autumn. India’s Commerce Minister is expected to meet with Trump government officials in the US from May 17th to 20th for further negotiations.

Trump’s comments came amid increasing frustration in New Delhi on the announcement of the US ceasefire president between India and Pakistan after four days of conflict and his insistence on using trade as a negotiating paper to secure the ceasefire.

The Republican also said today that he spoke with Apple and Managing Director Tim Cook, first discussing Apple’s plans to build India production factories for her iPhone to discourage him from expanding production there. “I said I don’t want to build in India,” he said. “India can take care of herself, it is doing very well.” As a result of their debate, Trump said Apple would “increase its production in the United States”.
