His decision to nominate Kimberly Guilfoyle for the position of ambassador of the USA in Greece announced the president-elect of the USA, Donald Trump. Her appointment must be approved by the Senate following a hearing in the International Relations Committee.
The proposed ambassador is a former Fox News anchor and former fiancee of Donald Trump Jr. She has previously served as an assistant California Attorney General and an advisor to the President-elect of the United States, while she was also married to the current Democratic governor of California, Gavin Newsom.
Sources in the American capital confirmed that initially there was willingness for the placement of the deputy Gus Bilirakis to the position of the new ambassador in Athens, as he enjoys the absolute confidence of Trump’s inner circle and was considered extremely qualified for this position. However, they clarified that this was not possible due to the thin majority that the Republicans have in the House of Representatives.
Given this, it was not considered prudent to make a move that could potentially jeopardize the legislative agenda of the new government. However, they point out that Gus Bilirakis will continue to play a special role, as he is on an open line of communication with the “Florida team” that includes the new White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, the foreign minister Marco Rubio and the national security adviser Mike Waltz.
