The trade agreement and tariffs
US President Donald Trump signed a series of trade and critical minerals deals with three Southeast Asian partners on Sunday, as Washington looks to address trade imbalances and diversify supply chains amid tighter restrictions on rare earth exports from China.
Trump, who is in Kuala Lumpur for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, signed mutual trade agreements with Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia.
The US will maintain tariff rate 19% in most exports from all three countries under these agreements, according to joint announcements made public by White House.
Trump also signed deals with Thailand and Malaysia, seeking cooperation to diversify supply chains of critical minerals, amid competing efforts by Beijing in a fast-growing sector.
Malaysia agreed, among other things, to refrain from banning or imposing quotas on exports to the US of critical minerals or rare earth elements, the countries said in a statement. The announcement, however, did not specify whether Malaysia’s pledge applies to raw or processed rare earths.
Thailand will eliminate tariff barriers on about 99% of goods, covering a full range of US industrial, food and agricultural products, the two countries said.
