US President Donald Trump announced last night (9.7.2025) his decision to enforce dictatorial 50% in imports from Brazilcommunicating via Truth Social the letter sent to Brazilian counterpart Luis Inasio Lula da Silva.
The duties will come into force on August 1st, Donald Trump said. In the letter he does not fail to express his support to the far -right former Brazilian president, Zaich Bolsonaru, who is being tried for a trusted coup attempt.
On Monday (7.7.2025), Donald Trump had threatened the BRICS group-whose founding member is Brazil-by imposing 10% of additional duties if they adopted anti-American policies after criticizing his tariff policy.
Lula, a host of this year’s BRICS Summit, commented that it is not “not serious” for the president of a country such as the US to threaten the world with duties through posts on social networking platforms. “If the US imposes duties, other countries have the right to do the same,” he said. At the same time, on the occasion of Trump’s comments in favor of Bolsonaru, he had rejected any “intervention” in his country’s internal affairs.
