The Transfiguration of the Savior is one of the five major milestones in the evangelical narrative of Jesus’ life, along with baptism, crucifixion, resurrection and taking over the heavens.
For the transformation of the Savior, we read in the narrative of the Evangelists, that the Lord took his disciples Peter, Ioannis and Jacob and climbed Mount Tabor to pray.
As Saint Nicodemus of Mount Athos typically notes: “He has taken three only apostles, as priests and superior. Petros was crushed, because very much in Christ. And John, because it was born by Christ. And Jakovos, because he was going to drink the glass of death, which the Lord was also drank. “
His three students, as they were tired of the difficult climb to Tabor and while sitting down to rest, fell into a deep sleep.
When they woke up, they saw an exquisite spectacle, as the Lord’s face shone like the sun, and his dresses were white as the light.
He was surrounded by two men, Moses and Elias. As a great Despotic Feast, the Transfiguration of the Savior is an exception, in the short but strict fasting of August 15, as fish eating is allowed.
At the same time, in the rural areas it is common on the day of the Transfiguration to be submitted to the churches to bless the first grapes of the year, which are then distributed to the church.
