On a central theme of the press conference of Socrates At the TIF, the intense rumor has evolved around Alexis Tsipras’ subsequent moves. The president of SYRIZA, accepting a storm of questions, was in apparent embarrassment, trying to balance the need to send a clear message and avoiding a frontal conflict with the former prime minister.
The central line of Socrates Famellou was clear: any move leads to further breakdown of the progressive space is unthinkable and operates for the benefit of the Mitsotakis government. Using the word “unthinkable” repeatedly for the scenarios of creating a new party or Alexis Tsipras’ independence, he stressed that “there is no room for new fragmentation”. He emphasized that the only response to government policy is the “united answer” and the synthesis of forces.
At the same time, Mr Famellos described Alexis Tsipras as a “valuable supporter” and “capital” for SYRIZA, defended his work (2015-2019) and noted that recent interventions by the former prime minister are moving in the same direction.
Expanding his call for unity, he also referred to efforts for progressive cooperation, repeating his call to PASOK and the new left, stressing that this dialogue must acquire specific content immediately after the TIF.
