Pope Francis chose a simple ceremony and had even requested that he had no television coverage of his burial in Santa Maria Matzore.
On Saturday leaders from all over the world, clergy, priests and faithful gathered in the Vatican and the streets where the procession would pass with Pope Francis’ body to say the last goodbye to their beloved Pontiff.
He did not want to be buried in the Vatican but in the church he loved most: in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggore. His tombstone only mentions his name: “Francis”.
In Santa Maria Matzore, he prayed for the last time, a week before his death.
Early on Sunday morning crowds have gathered in the Vatican.
Faithful also come to Santa Maria Matzore to worship the tomb of Pope Francis.
