The tomatoes It is one of the main ingredients of the rustic salad, being one of the main foods of the Mediterranean diet.
Although many consider them to be vegetables, tomatoes are in fact fruit. And as with all fruits, the way of storage plays an important role in their taste and quality.
Many people are accustomed to placing tomatoes in the fridge immediately after purchasing from the popular market or supermarket.
In this way, we may try to keep them fresh for more days, but this is one of the frequent mistakes we make.
Low temperature can alter their taste
When we place the tomatoes in the refrigerator, then the low temperature is going to alter their taste. Tomatoes contain enzymes that are responsible for the rich aroma and characteristic taste. Store tomatoes at temperatures below 12 degrees Celsius – as in the refrigerator – then the action of these enzymes stops and thus lose their taste.
That is why, after all, when we cut a tomato from the fridge, then it seems to us.
Where should we store tomatoes
If your tomatoes are mature, then they should be stored at room temperature. Be sure to place the tomatoes in a well -ventilated spot of the kitchen, away from the immediate sunlight. So you can put them in a bowl, without stacking them on top of each other.
It is also good to leave them with the stalks upwards. This applies, of course, to tomatoes that are unripe and green, as at room temperature, they will continue to ripen until they have a red color.
Finally, if you have overripe tomatoes that you do not intend to use immediately and are afraid that they will spoil, then you can put them in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. If the tomato is already cut or is on the limit of wear, then the refrigerator may slow down its deterioration.
