The implementation of the new national supercomputer “Daedalus” and the Data Center in the Lavrion Technology Park begins

The country acquires one of the strongest computational systems pan -European

The launch of the new national supercomputer “DAIDALOS” and the Lavrion Data Center, the Minister of Digital Governance announced today, Dimitris Papastergioufrom the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park (ICT), where the new supercomputer will be built.

Between the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EYDITE SA – GRNET), a body of the Ministry of Digital Governance and the Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the Convention on the Construction of the Supercomputor was signed, while the signature for the electromechanical equipment and the design of the space with MAINSYS.

The project has Total budget of EUR 58.9 million (including VAT) and is part of the enhancement of the country’s public digital infrastructure, as the action of the 2020-2025 digital transformation Bible of the Ministry of Digital Governance. Implemented by EYDITE SA, a body of the Ministry of Digital Governance, in the context of National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with the funding of the European Union – NextGenerationeu through the recovery Fund and the European Organization of the EuroHPC JU (European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking).

More specifically, “DAIDALLOS” will be implemented in two stages and completed in collaboration with EYDITE SA with two contractors who have been awarded the public competitions: a) with the contractor “Hewlett Packard Enterprise” on the supply and installation of advanced computing equipment, storage and software, and educational services, with a budget of € 41 million (including VAT), and b) with the contractor “Mainsys SA” which awarded the formation of electromechanical infrastructure and the formation of a new data center in the Lavrion Technological Park, with a budget of € 17.9 million (including VAT).

The Lavrion Data Center meets the requirements of the International Data Certification Organization “UPTIME INSTITUTE” in terms of its availability and reliability, while its operation follows the security policies of EYTITS Data Centers.

The strongest computational system in Greece and one of the top in Europe

The supercomputer “DAIDALOS”, with 89 Petaflops, will be the strongest computational system in Greece and one of the leading in Europe. Its development is an important step in the country’s scientific and technological development, enhancing research and innovation opportunities in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Personalized Medicine, Meteorology, Large Data Analysis and Developing Smart Transport Systems. It should be noted that the infrastructure of the supercomputer is designed to be sustainable to use renewable energy sources and advanced cooling systems, which significantly reduce energy consumption.

The new national supercomputer will be 150 times stronger than the existing ARIS supercomputer, executing eighty -nine million billions (ie eighty -nine four million – 89,000,000,000,000,000) per second, and is expected to be classified between the first twenty in performance in the list of the top 500 performance of the world in performance (PP500) and efficient energy (Green500). With its computational capabilities it will meet the growing needs of the research and scientific community, attracting additional young scientists and contributing to world -class research. It is expected to be available in early 2026 for use by the scientific and academic communityindustry and the public sector throughout Europe, reinforcing Greece’s position on the world map of high computers.

It is recalled that “DAIDALOS” and the new data center will be installed in the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park of the National Technical University of Athens, In the historic building of the former electric station, a recognized monument of the modern industrial heritage, 1,500 sq.m. The exploitation of the site is an iconic investment in the field of high -performance computational (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), enhancing the role of the area as a cutting -edge technological hub.

It will be the computational core of the Greek “factory” Ai Factory, which will promote technological progress in areas such as health, environmental viability, culture and language. Implementation of AI Factory “Pharos” is expected to begin in April 2025. Greece, as one of the first seven European countries and a total of thirteen to acquire their own “factory” TN, is established among the pioneers in the responsible and effective use of TN with significant benefits for society and the economy.

Papastergiou: We are established as a pioneer country in responsible use of artificial intelligence

Digital governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou said: “From Lavrio, a point where before From about 120 years the 2nd Industrial Revolution unfolded, we take an important step towards our position in the 4th Industrial Revolution And the passage to the age of artificial intelligence. We methodically establish as a pioneer country in the responsible use of TN and emerging technologies.

With the development of the supercomputer “DAIDALOS” we will have one of the strongest computational systems in the world on which we will build policies for the country’s “tomorrow”, which is directly related to TN. Its construction was also a key factor in the choice of Greece, among the first seven European countries, which will acquire their own “factory” TN. Where there was once a factory, a new, faster, more innovative will be made, which with modern infrastructure will give young scientists the opportunity to evolve and produce innovative solutions. The computational capabilities of the “DAIDALOS” will act as a driving force for the development of the research and business community. It is worth noting that “DAIDALOS” will be one of the fastest machinery in Europe and the world.

Public bodies, universities, start -ups, research centers will be able to utilize its potential to develop applications, services and products for the benefit of citizenscontributing to the country’s development course. We are all moving together on the next digital page of Greece with solid bases to take advantage of all the opportunities available. By right decisions TN will go the country forward. “

The Chairman of the NTUA, Emeritus Professor of NTUA Stefanos Kollias, said: “DAIDALOS is a technological leap for our country. Its operation will enhance Greece’s research and innovative dynamics and will significantly contribute to the development of advanced technologies as it will also be used in the implementation of the AI Factory “Pharos”. EYTH confirms its commitment to the triptych infrastructure – data – talent, which it considers as the basis for the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence in public sector services, with the aim of continuously improving the quality of life of citizens. “

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Managing Director Michalis Kasimiotis said: “We are proud to be proud to be proud that we as a Hewlett Packard Enterprise, we are contributing to the implementation of the supercomputer” DAIDALOS “, a landmark project for Greece and its scientific and research community. “DAIDALLOS” is not just a supercomputer – it is the bridge that will lead Greece to the new era of technology and digital innovation enabling Greece’s brightest minds to express their talent. We are particularly pleased that through our know -how on high performance infrastructure, we will actually support the creation of a cutting -edge computing system that will accelerate research, innovation and sustainable development. We are committed to providing top high performance solutions that will allow the scientific and academic communityin public administration and in the business world, to fully utilize the capabilities of computing power and artificial intelligence applications. This project will place the country in the world’s scene of advanced technology. “

MAINSYS SA CEO George Plavoukos said: “MAINSYS takes over with vision and know -how to form a state -of -the -art data centerlaying new foundations for Greece’s technological superiority. This project is not just about infrastructure is an innovation accelerator that will shield the country’s research and technological dynamics. “DAIDALLOS” and The AI Factory “Pharos” puts us on the map as pioneers in the race to integrate artificial intelligence, a race that we can lead at European level. Mainsys invests in the power of data and, above all, in the talent of its people. Because real innovation is not just a matter of technology – it is a matter of perspective, ambition and boldness. “

It is worth noting that the Minister of Digital Governance was placed at the event.
