“We see indications that (the US) are considering abandoning Ukraine and not trying to secure an agreement with the Russians because it is difficult,” said EU High Representative on Foreign and Security Policy.
“There is a B plan, but we have to work on plan A. because otherwise, if we focus on Plan B, (inevitably) this will happen,” Callas told the FT, adding that talks with Washington and other partners are continuing to ensure that the West are maintained.
However, Callas acknowledged that there were discussions in some EU capitals on whether the Trump government would follow if it abandoned Ukraine and restores relations with Russia.
In the context of their peaceful proposals, the US has been offered to remove sanctions against Moscow – imposed in cooperation with the EU – and to restart economic cooperation with Russia in areas such as energy. Hungary has threatened to veto the necessary unanimous vote at the end of July to extend the EU sanctions regime.
