The European Union announced the lifting of financial sanctions in Syria – what will apply to weapons

OR European Union announced today (20/05/2025) the removal of all financial sanctions in Syriawhich had been implemented by targeting the previous Bashar al -Assad regime.

“Today, we have made the decision to lift economic sanctions in Syria,” European diplomat Kaya Callas, the head of European diplomat Kaya, said in a post on the European Union’s Foreign Ministers’ meeting in the European Union.

“We want to help the Syrian people rebuild a new Syria, inclusive and peaceful,” he added.

The removal of sanctions mainly concerns the banking system, as it has so far been banned from accessing the international capital market. It is also envisaged that the Syrian Central Bank assets will “thaw”.

Washington made the same decision last week.

“The removal of sanctions expresses the regional and international will of Syrian support,” the country’s foreign minister said in a press conference in Damascus. “The Syrian people today have a historical and very important opportunity to rebuild the country,” Ashand al -Sibani added.

The EU, however, does not exclude the possibility of imposing new sanctions on those responsible for violence against the Alawites.

The other measures taken, such as the ban on selling weapons and equipment that could be used to suppress citizens will remain in force.
