The launch of the new national supercomputer “DAIDALOS” and the Lavrion Data Center, the Minister of Digital Government announced, Dimitris Papastergioufrom the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park (ICT), where the new supercomputer will be built.
Between the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EYDATE SA – GRNET), a body of the Minister of Digital Governance and the Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the contract for the construction of the supercomputer was signed, while the signature of electromechanical equipment and the design of the MACSYS space was preceded.
The project has a total budget of EUR 58.9 million (including VAT) and is part of the strengthening of the country’s public infrastructure as an action of the Ministry of Digital Governance 2020-2025. Implemented by EYDITE SA, a body of the Ministry of Digital Governance, in the context of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with the funding of the European Union – NextGenerationeu through the EUROHPC JU (European High Performance Computing Joint Joint Undertaking).
“From Lavrio, a point where the 2nd Industrial Revolution unfolded about 120 years ago, we are taking an important step towards our position in the 4th Industrial Revolution and the passage to the age of artificial intelligence. We are methodically established as a pioneer country in the responsible use of TN and emerging technologies, “said Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou.
As he explained: “With the development of the supercomputer” DAIDALOS “we will have one of the strongest computational systems in the world, on which we will build policies for the” tomorrow “of the country, which is directly related to artificial intelligence. Its construction was, moreover, a key factor in the choice of Greece, among the first seven European countries that will acquire their own “factory” TN. Where there was once a factory, a new, faster, more innovative will be made, which with modern infrastructure will give young scientists the opportunity to evolve and produce innovative solutions. The computational capabilities of “DAIDALOS” will act as a driving force for the development of the research and business community. It is worth noting that “DAIDALOS” will be one of the fastest machinery in Europe and the world. Public bodies, universities, start -ups, research centers will be able, by utilizing its potential, to develop applications, services and products for the benefit of citizens, contributing to the country’s development. We are all moving together on the next digital page of Greece with solid bases to take advantage of all the opportunities available. By right decisions TN will go the country forward. “
In two stages the implementation
“DAIDALOS” will be implemented in two stages and completed in collaboration with EYDITY SA with two contractors in which the public competitions were awarded: a) with the contractor “Hewlett Packard Enterprise” with the supply and installation of advanced computing equipment, storage and software, (including VAT), and b) with the contractor “Mainsys SA” which awarded the formation of electromechanical infrastructure and the formation of a new data center in the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park, with a budget of € 17.9 million (including VAT).
The Lavrion Data Center meets the requirements of the International Certification of Data Certificate “Uptime Institute” in terms of its availability and reliability, while its operation follows the security policies of EYTITS Data Centers.
Its characteristics
The supercomputer of the “DAIDALOS”, with power of 89 Petaflops It will be the strongest computational system in Greece and one of the leading in Europe. Its development is an important step in the country’s scientific and technological development, enhancing research and innovation opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence, personalized medicine, meteorology, large volume of data and the development of smart transport systems. It should be noted that the infrastructure of the supercomputer is designed to be sustainable to use renewable energy sources and advanced cooling systems, which significantly reduce energy consumption.
The new national supercomputer will be 150 times stronger than the existing ARIS supercomputer, performing eighty -nine millions (89,000,000,000,000,000) acts of mobile subdivision per second, and is expected to be ranked among the first twenty 500 -year -olds in the world. (Green500). With its computational capabilities it will meet the growing needs of the research and scientific community, attracting additional young scientists and contributing to world -class research. It is expected to be available in early 2026, for use by the scientific and academic community, industry and public sector throughout Europe, reinforcing Greece’s position on the world map of high computers.
“DAIDALOS” and the new Data Center will be installed in the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park of the National Technical University of Athens, in the historic building of the former electric station, a recognized monument to the modern industrial heritage of 1,500 sq.m. The exploitation of the site is an iconic investment in the field of high -performance computational (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), enhancing the role of the area as a cutting -edge technological hub.
It will be the computational core of the Greek “Factory” of Ai Factory “Pharos”which will promote technological progress in areas such as health, environmental viability, culture and language. The implementation of the AI Factory “Pharos” is expected to begin in April 2025. Greece, as one of the first seven European countries and a total of thirteen to acquire their own “factory” TN, is established among the pioneers in responsible and effective use of TN with significant benefits for society and economy.
