The internet age verification application – adopted by the Commission – is based on the Greek proposal for digital internet control, a solution already integrated into the Greek Kids Wallet application – already used by thousands of parents.
As part of the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Commission today presented an original verification of the age of internet users in order to prevent children from accessing harmful and dangerous content. According to the Commission, the verification application will be tested and adapted further in cooperation with five Member States: Greece, Denmark, Spain, France and Italy.
These countries will be the first to work with the Committee for the technical solution aimed at launching national age verification applications.
“The prototype of age verification application is user -friendly and protects privacy by setting a ‘golden rule’ to ensure age on the internet,” the committee said. It will allow, for example, to users to easily prove that they are over 18 years of age when they have access to limited content for adults on the Internet, while maintaining complete control of any other personal information, such as the exact age or identity of the user. No one will be able to monitor, see or rebuild the content consulted by individual users, the committee notes.
At the same time, the Commission today presented guidelines for the protection of minors online. Among other things, guidelines provide recommendations to address addiction, intimidation on the internet, unwanted contact with strangers and harmful content. These guidelines for the protection of minors were drawn up after research in collaboration with experts and public consultation.
The age verification plan began to develop in early 2025. It lays the foundations for the wider development of age -appropriate services and is based on the same technical specifications as the “European Digital Identity Wallets (EID) to be developed before the end of 2026.
This ensures compatibility between the two and it is possible to integrate the age verification function into future electronic identification wallets.

The guidelines on the protection of minors for the platforms, coupled with the new plan to verify age, are a huge step in progress in this case.
