August 15, 1940. Greece is celebrating the Assumption and thousands of faithful are found in Tinos For the great celebration. At the same time, the Italian submarine Dolphin torpedo the cruiser “Elli”writing one of the most dramatic pages of modern Greek history.
In this climate, a first -time newspaper reporter had been sent as an envoy to cover the event. Only … he never went.
From the mission to… escape
Instead of traveling to Tinos, the young journalist preferred to spend the day of Our Lady at a hotel in Loutraki, hanging out with his girlfriend. Without knowing what had happened, he returned to the Territory newspaper, ready to deliver his “report”.
The editor -in -chief, without saying much, asked him to write immediately:
“With the usual brilliance, the celebration of Our Lady in Tinos was celebrated. Crowds of believers … in the light of the image … and in this year, a deaf were mourning, while other sufferers expected the miracle. “
The moment of revelation
When the editor reads the first spades, he began to go. And then came the ataka who wrote a journalistic story:
“So there were miracles, well, a jerk? Didn’t you see the miracle that you are fooling? “
The reporter had described a celebration he had not watched, completely ignoring the torpedoing of “Ellis” that happened in front of the eyes of thousands of believers.
From dismissal to career
The “blunder of the century” cost his work in the newspaper and departed for the United States. The information is lost here, as one view wants to continue the journalist’s profession there and the other view wants the young man to wash dishes in a Greek restaurant and then open his own.
Whatever the case, one is for sure. It is the biggest blunder in the history of the Greek press.
