He had a phone call in the afternoon, Mr Cypriot chairman Nikos Christodoulidis with the new Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhiurman.

According to a post by government spokesman Constantinos Letympiotis on X, the phone call was made at the initiative of President Christodoulidis immediately after the announcement of the results of the vote in the occupied territories last Sunday, with the aim of quickly restoring a communication channel.

During the conversation, Mr. Christodoulidis congratulated Mr. Erhiurmans on his election and expressed readiness to hold a joint meeting as soon as possible. The Turkish Cypriot leader undertook to return in the immediate future, in order to determine the place and time of the meeting.

President Christodoulidis reiterated his firm will to contribute constructively to the efforts of the UN Secretary General for the resumption of negotiations. The upcoming consultation on the appointment between Christodoulidis and Erchiourman is the first practical test of intentions after the change of leadership in the occupied territories.
