Tax returns: AADE data showed expenditure, loans, cars and swimming pools

Data (income from rents, loans, cars) resulted from last year’s processing tax returns by the Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE), were revealing about the ownership in Greece.

Of the 6,720.037 tax returns revealed that about 35% of Greek households (2,335.187) told AADE owned a privately owned home while 27.5% (1,844,384 households) declare that the main residence in which they reside is leased or has been free.

The number of taxpayers who stated last year that they had acquired or rejected a new property is 116,000. 20% of taxpayers (1,081,634) have made real estate income. They declared € 4.69 billion gross income from housing or average 4,300 euros.

Also, 1,672 states that they have real estate abroad with their incomes totaling EUR 20.34 million or EUR 12,000 on average.

Abroad property – from real estate and bank deposits, investment accounts, etc. – 83,216 taxpayers appear. But there are also 1.65 million citizens who pay mortgages or consumer loans, reflecting the pressure on borrowing costs.

The financial “profile” of 2024 statements is completed with 130,000 families investing in their children’s private education.

More specifically, the tax “image” of households in terms of assets and expenditure shows:

  • Property: 2,335.187 households reside in a privately owned home while 1,844,384 households declare that the main residence in which they reside is leased or have been free of charge.
  • Property income: 1,081,634 taxpayers reported € 4.69 billion gross income from housing or 4,300 euros on average. Also, 1,672 declare that they have real estate abroad with incomes that received a total of EUR 20.34 million or EUR 12,000 on average.
  • Cars, yachts: Taxpayers say they have 5,494,800 cars and 96,886 yachts in their name.
  • Pools: 18,322 taxpayers say they have an outdoor pool in their home, while 377 natural persons appear in the tax office with an indoor pool.
  • Expenditure: 131,031 families go to private schools paying a total of 601.64 million euros or € 4,591.58 on average. At 2,510 there are taxpayers who pay costs for domestic assistants, charm and teachers, a total value of EUR 34.6 million or EUR 13,787 on average.
  • Deposits: Over 3.2 million taxpayers reported interest from deposits to domestic banks totaling € 567.45 million. At the same time 21,277 taxpayers have interest from deposits to foreign banks with the total amount of € 207.75 million.
  • Loans: Taxpayers who declare in E1 of the tax return that they have received mortgages or consumer loans, paying installments totaling EUR 6.24 billion or an average of EUR 3,700. This amount is added to the remaining living presumptions.
  • Shopping: Transactions with electronic money were made of 7,528,719 VAT.

The total amount for purchases of goods and the provision of services listed on the codes of the Declaration 049 (debtor) and 050 (spouse) amounted to a total of EUR 59.47 billion.
