Tasoulas: The terrorist attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus in Damascus

The President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas accepted, earlier today, at the Presidential Palace the Serbian Prime Minister Tzuro Matsut (Djuro Macut), who visits Greece on the occasion of his honorary doctor of the Department of Medicine of the School of Science and Health of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Mr Tasoulas referred to the powerful historical, geographical, cultural and religious links that associate the two countries and form the basis for the development of bilateral strategic cooperation for the benefit of the prosperity of the two peoples.

The President of the Republic then expressed his concern about current geopolitical developments and the escalation of hostilities, especially in the Middle East, stressing the need to find diplomatic solutions to the problems of the region. He also condemned the heinous terrorist attack on the Greek Orthodox church of Prophet Elias in Damascus, underlining the importance of protecting all the religious communities of Syria and especially Christians.

Finally, he reiterated Greece’s support for Serbia’s European perspective, considering that, in the midst of growing geopolitical liquidity, the integration of Western Balkan countries as a whole to the European family would contribute decisively to the stability and prosperity of the region.

For his part, the Serbian prime minister, among other things, expressed his assessment of Greece’s assistance in the European course of Serbia, as well as supporting the territorial integrity of his country.

He also expressed a complete understanding of Serbia in Greece’s positions on the need to protect the rights of Christian Orthodox, including the issue of the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine Mount Sinai.

He also referred to the prospects of further development of bilateral cooperation in a number of areas of common interest, with an emphasis on infrastructure, network connectivity, energy and the economy.

Finally, he convened the invitation of the President of the Republic of Serbia to his Greek counterpart to make an official visit, which was accepted.
