Mr. Tasoula’s full message is as follows:
“The celebration of the fourth anniversary of the glorious revolution of 1821, the most shocking struggle of our modern history, is not just a ritual mention of a historical event, a moment of national exhaustion that is exhausted in celebrations. It is mainly an opportunity for reflection and meditation. It invites us to look at the long path we have gone through until we conquer the insurmountable good of our national, social, political and individual freedom. To convert emotion into awareness, the lived emotion into self -consciousness. Let us think about how difficult the way was to the implementation of the national vision, how heavenly it was marked by enthusiasm and frustrations, by successes and regressions, from “dolphic division” and internal rivalries that have come, sometimes, as a civil war.
But also to feel proud, not only of the greatness of our national awakening, but also for our ability to transcend failures, to demonstrate durability, unity and faith. It is enough to consider how much we have achieved from the constitution of the Greek state to this day, despite the many trials that have reserved in our homeland the two centuries that have since been.
The course was not mentioned here. However, we have managed to build a modern state, which has been seeking to improve, as has been affected by the beginning of the 19th century, the anonymous author of the “Greek Prefecture”: a state based on the principles of democracy and equity. We lived, after the fall of the dictatorship of the colonels in 1974, the longest period of political maturity and prosperity in our modern history. Recently, and with great sacrifices, we have avoided collapse and overcome the financial crisis. We have consolidated the bonds with Europe, since the birth of the modern Greek state. And I believe that despite our pathogens and weaknesses, despite the frightening international environment and the liquidity of the times, we can hope and optimize.
The revolution of 1821 emerged from the expectation of freedom, self -determination, establishment of a national, coherent identity. A small, numerically, people with an inlet faith and passion of freedom, opposed the power of the powerful Ottoman Empire and first realized this expectation, affecting the course, and the direction to the gradual prevalence of the form of the nation-state. Today, this people, our people, expect a better future.
I firmly believe that we will be able to implement it, all together, exceeding what separates us and investing in what they unite us, always having in our minds and hearts the lyrics of Andreas Calvos: “Learn that in the dances of wars/ as the soldier saved the soldier.” Happy birthday to everyone and everyone!
