Announcement on the occasion of cyberattack at the Greek Open University and the leak of citizens’ personal data on the Dark Web
The SYRIZA Digital Policy and Education Department of SYRIZA, Popi Tsapanidou, with the Digital Politics Department of the Party, was made in a joint announcement, on the occasion of the cyberattack at the Hellenic Open University and the leakage of citizens’ personal data.
As stated in the announcement:
“The cyberattack on the Greek Open University platform on October 25, 2024, was another loud blow to the cyber security of the country and led to a huge volume of personal data of students, including names, photos,
The EAP’s assumption, five months later, that at least 65 GB of these personal data have been identified on the Dark Web, which have already been recovered by third parties, confirms the government’s deficiency to effectively deal with cyberattacks and reduce losses when they occur.
SYRIZA-PS had already warned on November 26, 2024, in the debate on the bill on cyber security, the need to shield state infrastructure against digital threats and the immediate investigation of this attack, since there are also military men.
Despite repeated warnings on the growing threat of cyberattacks, the government is still indifferent to indifference and oligarchy in taking substantial protection measures. Citizens see their personal data leaking to the Dark Web, while those responsible are limited to statements and promises, without any substantial progress.
SYRIZA-PS requires the immediate information of affected citizens about the size of the leak and the necessary protection measures, as access to such information is their fundamental right. It calls for political and administrative responsibilities for delayed reaction and lack of transparency. It points out the need to apply strict cyber security protocols to all public institutions, with clear procedures for protecting and preventing similar incidents in the future. Finally, it requires immediate investigation of the incident from the Personal Data Protection Authority and the return of responsibilities where required.
Protecting personal data and digital security of citizens is a non -negotiable priority for SYRIZA. “
