“October 28 highlights the timeless greatness of will of the Greek people for Freedom and brings back to the fore the great values that distinguished him in the critical historical moments: self-sacrifice, sacrifice, solidarity, patriotism, collectivity”, he states in his message for the October 28th the SYRIZA-PS.
It also states: “We honor the Unknown Soldier who gave his life for the country and freedom.
The epic of the 1940s, the National Resistance, the heroism among the ruins, did not only affect Nazism, its local collaborators and those who ruthlessly enrich themselves from the suffering of their compatriots. They charted a new path for the people at the same time and were the leaven of later social struggles and conquests.
In front of us today is also fascism, overt or covert. There is the discrediting of the democratic institutions and conquests of the Greek people. Countering racist ideas, hatred, division and discord. The great corruption and the undermining of the political system. The condemnation of the social majority to a daily life devoid of values, individual and collective rights, humanity and basic well-being.
The epic of 1940 teaches us and calls us. We will be worthy of him by fighting fascism and everything that threatens the freedoms and rights of the Greek people. Our strength lies in our unity, in the preservation of historical memory, in our indomitable will for social justice and a better life. We deserve it, we are entitled to it and it is up to us to achieve it.
October 28th reminds us of the danger of war and the value of peace. Peace for our homeland and for our wider region. Peace in Europe, peace in the eastern Mediterranean. The slogan remains after the end of the BPP, “never again war, never again fascism”. This means a foreign policy aimed at diplomacy and peace and economies of peace, not war.’
