US envoy for the SyriaThomas Barack, said today (29.05.2025) by Damascus that Washington believes in achieving peace between Syria and Israelstressing that a dialogue for a non -attack agreement between the two countries and the definition of borders should begin.
Syria and Israel have been officially still in war since 1948. “The problem between Syria and Israel can be resolved,” Barack told the Saudi TV network al-Arabiya.
“We need to start properly with a non -attack (…) pact,” said the US official, who inaugurated the US ambassador’s residence in the Syrian capital.
The US Embassy remained closed for more than a decade.
Barack also announced that US President Donald Trump would announce that Syria would no longer be characterized by the US terrorist sponsor.
The US official arrived in Damascus today for a visit that is a new milestone to the approach between the two countries after the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
Following the fall of former President Bashar’s regime al -Assad Assad, relations between the new Syrian power and the United States have gradually improved. At the end of December, an American delegation under Barbara Lif, responsible for the Middle East within the State Department, had gone to Damascus for first contact with the new Syrian leaders.
