Attack on his bases ISIS at Syria held by the US on Sunday (08/12/2024) while Joe Biden hailed the fall of the Assad regime.
According to a US official, the targets were “ISIS leaders, operatives and camps”, while B-52 bombers, F-15 fighters and A-10 aircraft participated in the raids.
In particular, the United States today carried out “dozens of airstrikes” in central Syria against “more than 75 targets” of the Islamic State group, announced Centcom, the US military command for the Middle East.
“There should be no doubt: we will not allow the Islamic State to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria,” General Eric Kurila said in a Centcom statement after the rebel group’s blitzkrieg toppled President Bashar. al-Assad.
The raids were reportedly carried out as part of the mission to disrupt, degrade and defeat ISIS, to prevent the terrorist group from conducting external operations and to ensure that ISIS does not seek to exploit the current situation in central Syria to to regroup in central Syria,” the official said.
In his first statement after the fall of Assad, US President Joe Biden said, among other things, that “it is an act of justice that allows the Syrians a historic opportunity.”
In particular, Joe Biden emphasized that “the Assad regime finally fell.” This regime brutally tortured and killed literally hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice. It is a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country.”
Biden also said that Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted in a surprise attack by rebel groups, should be “accountable” for the “hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians” who were “harmed, tortured and killed.”
“We are not sure where he is, but he is believed to be in Moscow,” the US president said, as Russian news agencies reported today (08.12/2024) evening that Bashar al-Assad and his family are in Moscow .
Joe Biden assured that the United States will discuss with “all Syrian groups” about the transition of power in Syria.
“We will talk with all the Syrian groups, and in the framework of the process under the auspices of the United Nations, to have a transition towards an independent, sovereign Syria, with a new Constitution, a new government that will serve all Syrians,” the American underlined chairman.
The United States will support Syria’s neighbors during the transition period and work with Syrian partners and stakeholders to help seize the opportunity and manage the risk, he added.
The US president warned that “some of the rebel groups” involved in the surprise attack in Syria have “a history of terrorism and human rights violations”.
“We have noted statements by the leaders of these rebel groups in recent days, who are saying what they need to at this time, but as they prepare to take on greater responsibilities, we will evaluate not only their words but also their actions,” he warned.
