The explosion in Duilaa, on the outskirts of Damascus, occurred as people prayed in the church of Prophet Elias.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, says 52 people were injured and killed, but the exact number is not clear.

The church, which was built in the 8th century and renovated in the 19th, suffered damage. Correspondents of the AFP news agency at the site said the church had been damaged.

Crushed woods and stables were fired after the explosion, images fell to the ground and blood lakes were created.

An eyewitness said the perpetrator came in and began shooting the people who were there before sparking the explosive mechanism in the vest he was wearing.

Local media reported that they were children among the victims.

Security forces and first aid rushed to the church and remove the injured and the corpses.

The Syrian interior ministry announced that the kamikaze that was blown up in the Damascus church was a member of the Islamic State organization.
