OR Syria It signs a $ 7 billion energy agreement with a US, Qatar and Turkey consortium for the restoration of the sector electricity destroyed by war.
The agreement was signed at the Damascus Presidential Palace, in the presence of transitional President Ahmad al -Sarah and the US special envoy to Syria, Thomas Barak. According to the Syrian authorities, the plan provides for the production of 5,000 megawatts to meet about 50% of the country’s electricity needs.
This is a “historic moment” and a “turning point” for Syrian infrastructure affected by almost 14 years of war, Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al -Bashir said.
Consortium, led by Qatar’s UCC Concession Investments, includes Turkish companies Kalyon Ges Enerji Yatirimlari and Cengiz Enerji as well as Power International USA.
In Syria, electricity holidays are chronic and can last up to 20 hours daily.
The agreement provides for the construction of four gas production stations in central and eastern Syria, and a 1,000 megawatt solar park in the south.
Bashir clarified that stations will use US and European technologies.
UCC President and CEO Ramez al -Hayat said the deal would allow more than 50,0000 direct and 250,000 indirect jobs to be created.
