Syria: Ambassador Nikolaos Protonotarios and two employees leave Damascus

“OR Damask was occupied by the rebels, it happened at 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning. Since then, the shootings have not stopped,” the Greek ambassador, Nikolaos Protonotarios, said while speaking to ERTNews about the situation in Syria.

The Greek ambassador in Damascus will leave on Monday (09/12/2024) from the capital of Syria, together with two employees at the embassy.

As he pointed out, “we now have a curfew, but there are shots. The Greek families here number around 50-60. I have spoken with the President and with members of the Greek diaspora. So far, my recommendation, that is, the embassy’s, has been for them to stay at home. The capture of Damascus by the rebels took place between 4 and 5 o’clock in the morning. Since then the shooting has not stopped.

Unfortunately the rebels were not coordinated, they are not organized in a group and they started a looting all over Damascus, including embassies, with the result that most of the embassies want to leave.

Most of them may leave tomorrow as well, including those from Greece, because the security situation here does not allow us to predict that we will stay with some security (…) We are three Greek employees of the embassy and we will leave tomorrow”.
