However, the case took an unexpected turn when authorities found signs of strangling on the woman’s throat and arrested him with the suspicion of premeditated homicide. It was held for 70 days before being released, under conditions that – as it is now revealed – left a deep mental trauma.
‘Was crushed’
According to the Phillip Nitschke of Exit International And inventor of the Sarco device, Willet was never again after his release in December 2024. ‘He had lost his smile and self -confidence’, Nitski notes. “He was a man deeply injured by the experience of imprisonment and the unfair category of strangulation.”
A few months later, Willet was hospitalized twice in psychiatric clinics. There had been a fall from the third floor of his residence in Zurich, with serious injuries. Doctors diagnosed that it was suffering from “acute polymorphic psychotic disorder”, which was related to the stress of persecution and detention.
The German doctor Willet died on May 5 in Cologne, with the help of a specialized assisted suicide organization. As Nitschke points out, his death was not only a personal tragedy, but also a complaint: “He was crushed. He knew that he had done nothing illegal, but his belief in Switzerland’s law was dissolved. “
Willet was among the first to publicly support Sarco – a technology that caused reactions – but finds supporters around the world. In the case that led to his death, two lawyers and a Volkskrant newspaper photographer were also arrested, who was photographing the venture. Everyone was finally released.
Public prosecutors said they had warned in writing Exit International not to use Sarco in the area. “We have clearly told them that they would face criminal consequences if they do it,” prosecutor Peter Rhine had said.
