Sweden: 47-year-old jailed for selling Scania secrets to Russian diplomat

Court in Sweden sentences 47-year-old Swede to three years in prison on espionage charges Russia, finding him guilty of selling classified information to truck manufacturer Scania.

The court found the Swedish citizen guilty of stealing and selling secret information of the truck manufacturer Scania to an official of the Russian embassy, while he acquitted him for similar espionage charges against the car manufacturer Volvo Cars belonging to the Geely group.

“To convict someone of espionage requires that Sweden’s security be harmed if the information benefits foreign powers,” the court said in a statement.

“The district court has ruled that this applies to the information obtained by the man from Scania, while it has not been established that this applies to the information obtained from Volvo,” the statement said.

The court statement also said that the man regularly received cash in meetings with the Russian embassy official, which he considered as a reward for the information he provided.

The convict was arrested during a meeting with the Russian diplomat in a restaurant, at a time when he had just received 27,800 Swedish kronor ($ 3,242).

The 47-year-old Swede, who denied having committed a crime, had worked as a consultant for Volvo Cars in 2016 and 2017 and for Scania in 2018 and 2019, until his arrest.

His lawyer said he would appeal.

Scania is owned by truck manufacturer Traton.
