The study on its effects was delivered fire of Schinos Corinth, which in May 2021 burned 80% of the area. This is the first of the six studies prepared by the National Observatory and concerns the hydrological basin of Alepochori.
The director of EAA Research and scientific director of the BEYOND Center for Earth Observation and Satellite Remote Sensing Research, Dr. Ch. Kontoes presented the study on the fire in Schino, Corinth, to the governor of Attica, G. Patoulis.
According to Mr. Kontoes, the study includes models for forecasting flood, landslide and soil erosion and photographic documentation of the situation of streams in the area (upstream and downstream), prioritization of intervention points to address the occurrence of possible flood hazards or floods. impacts of the fire, but also proposals for medium and long-term interventions and studies, with the aim of better protection of neighboring settlements in the hydrological basin.
Five more studies
It is noted that another 5 respective studies will follow for the other hydrological basins affected by the recent fires upstream in the areas of N. Peramos, Mandra, Elefsina, Marathon and NE Attica and will be delivered to the Attica Region by early October, in the context of the relevant program contract they have co-signed.
The presentation of the study was also attended by the Deputy Regional Governor of West Attica L. Kosmopoulos and those in charge of Technical Works, who will use the study to launch targeted interventions where required, within the responsibilities of the region, as Mr. Patoulis pointed out, adding that “The region, in parallel with the local interventions in the streams which it continues on a daily basis, at an intensive pace, will also proceed with studies for targeted projects at high risk points, as indicated by the scientific studies”.
Finally, he underlined that the region also undertakes initiatives for the information and education of the citizens in matters of dealing with and protection from possible flood phenomena.
