In a small increase minimum wage will proceed the Spain, as announced by the left government of the country on Thursday night. The government agreed to a pay rise after days of tense negotiations between the government and the unions.
“The increase of 15 euros per month (about 1.6%) will be implemented (retrospectively) from September 1, 2021,” the ministry and the CCOO and UGT unions announced in a joint statement. The deal, which raises the minimum wage to 1,125 euros a month gross for 12 months, has not been signed by employers, who say a new raise in the minimum wage could undermine Spain’s recovery.
This increase of 15 euros was initially considered insufficient by the unions against the background of accelerating inflation and record electricity prices.
But in the end they decided to accept it, after agreeing with the government that the new increases will be given in 2022 and 2023 in order to meet the goal of reaching the minimum wage at 60% of the average wage by the end of the current parliamentary term in 2023.
In 2019, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had already increased the minimum wage by 22%, to 1,050 euros gross. This revaluation was followed by a second increase of 5.5% in January 2020.
These increases, which are the largest in decades, are aimed at raising Spain’s minimum wage – which was hitherto very low – to that of Spain’s European neighbors.
