South Korea and Japan insist that North Korea fired two more ballistic missiles off its east coast.
North Korea is steadily developing its weapons programs as talks aimed at dismantling its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs in exchange for easing US sanctions have stalled since 2019.
The Japanese Coast Guard also announced that an object, which could be a ballistic missile, was launched from North Korea and fell outside the exclusive economic zone of Japan.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has condemned the rocket launch, calling it “outrageous”.
Suga and South Korean President Moon Jae-in convened meetings of their national security councils to discuss the launches, according to their offices.
Talks with China in Seoul
The foreign ministers of South Korea and China are holding talks in Seoul today amid concerns over North Korea’s recent missile test and stagnation in denuclearization talks between Pyongyang and Washington.
If confirmed to be a ballistic missile, the test would be North Korea’s first since March this year and a further breach of UN sanctions.
The launch comes after North Korea said it had successfully tested a new long-range cruise missile last weekend, calling it “a strategic weapon of great importance”. Analysts say the missile may be the country’s first such weapon capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
